The world is full of people striving in their life- some achieve easily while some struggle to achieve. Whats the reason? Self-improvement books, blogs, counsellors, phychologists have been trying to find this, religious leaders give their religion based reasons, counsellors advise self- determination and positive thinking. Theres no specific and common reason in their answers and solutions till date- the only common thread is the motivational words like positive thinking, you can, determination, ambition, and affirmations.- in effect, motivate yourself. If we were to look at examples of Personal Brands in this world, we find a lot of difference among the kind of people who are a personal brand today- some are educated from Ivy Leagues, some are drop outs, some are born in influential family, some are born in poverty, some achieve in a short timeline, some take time to achieve the similar kind of fame or financial resources. Both sets are motivated, generally positive thinkers, determined and persevere. What creates this difference of timelines? The only way we can understand is to look at the examples existing in this world- historically and current- and study their achievements. Examples of Personal Brands: Jeff Bezos-A Princeton Summa-cum-Laude, he was born in an average status family. As a kid, he enjoyed at his grandparents’ farmhouse and learnt about self-reliance from his grandfather and the importance of kindness. A normal happy childhood. Since childhood, he enjoyed reading books especially those about space sci-fiction. At the beginning of his career, he worked in a wall-street based company where he was in sales. There he came across the growth data of internet and decided that he wanted to be a part of that growth. A wave that was sweeping the time. He left his job and decided to start his own business selling books on internet. His parents gave him some funding and rest he raised venture capital that he calls “the hardest part of his work” today. The brick and mortar companies that were in that business at that time were bookstores like Barnes and Nobles. Internet was relatively unknown at that time and books were a product that he knew users like to touch and go through before buying. Despite this, he went ahead. He also knew that most people don’t know whats internet- even VCs questioned him about it. He still went ahead. Is that positive thinking? Is it determination? Is it foolishness? According to him, “its regret minimization” – “when I look back I don’t want to regret my inaction. I know there are 70% chances it will fail” – negative thinking and foolishness combined together in one sentence. Don’t leave your job, be rational, and listen to what is historical prevalence in this world- people want to touch books and with Barnes and Nobles around, no one will buy books online. Jeff Bezos is the most powerful Personal Brand today 70% chance of failure? Do a job. And we listen Bill Gates-Born in a rich powerful family, he is an Ivy League drop out. Fascinated by computers to which his access was in school, where he used to hack the school computer to get results. He was fascinated by the machine that he learnt to code to create history. His vision? A computer in every home. This was at a time when computers were just introduced and only businesses had access to them. He went to college but dropped out as he wanted his entire attention on the object of his fascination- computer. A machine that he coded to create its operating system- a system without which we cannot operate- Windows. A machine with his creation in every home on a machine he was fascinated with. Did he require a degree? An apprecticeship? A mentor? He learnt through books and hit and trial coding. He partnered with his school and college friends to become a sophisticated programmer and understand the operation of computer to commands and programs. Once he understood, he could create something that computer could understand- a code set for operating system. Then came internet. A patchwork we cant see, we call it web when its not. Its just programmed patches put together- Bill Gates created further through his company, Microsoft, the explorers we run today. A goal? Positive thinking? Determination. He says “It’s a fascination”. We hearfascination is ok, you got to eat. And we listen. Warren Buffet-He bought his first stock when he was 11 years old with the pocket money he got- his father was in stock market and he learnt through hearing him and learning from him. He used his pocket money to try on stocks- he lost all his pocket money. But as got a job working at Coke, he spent his money on stocks. He started reading books on trading, tried different strategies as he grew up, following his favourite book. When he applied for colleges, his father wanted him to go to Columbia but he got rejected. He was accepted at Wharton but dropped out and shifted to University of Nebraska. He then got into Columbia for Masters. By that time he had created a substantial portfolio when he met his mentor, Benjamin Graham whose book he was following as a final strategy that he uses till date. Under his mentor, he became more educated in stocks and started his business and started the most strange way of becoming a billionaire of the stature unheard of- only banks have the power to become what he became and in fact, he became more powerful than the banks. He eats McDonalds burger till date for breakfast that was his favourite dish on his birthday, drinks 5 Cokes a day, and eats candy and choclate fudge throughout the day. A normal goal- stock investment-, a normal person creating a business, normal habits, moving forward in life. Sounds like a person in a job rising in his career. Is it money that makes Buffet different from the person in a job? Or his ability to make money? Or good decisions? A person in a job rising is also making good decisions.
