We all want to move ahead in our careers and personal life- rising in corporate hierarchy, scaling our business, getting over obstacles, leading a happy personal life- visions that are growth oriented. How to achieve all this is a question that many ask and get confused by books, blogs, advisors, consultants that tell them to gain resilience, think big, and stay positive. All good suggestions- how to do this is the question before answering question of how to grow in all areas of career and personal life. If becoming a personal brand just by thinking big and starting a business or suddenly starting to ask for a raise in your job was an overnight solution, the entire world would become full of billionaires. Thinking big is a generic term that tells you to think of scaling your idea and taking immediate action towards that big think. You start, fail, fail again, fail again, achieve a minor goal- you get discouraged, start having doubts, get anxious, and finally think of all the money you wasted in buying books, joining courses, starting payments to vendors for business that doesn’t work, and time spent on reading blogs. You may start thinking that you are a failure and rationalize it to yourself by thinking “Its ok- all cant become rich, healthy, or CEOs.” But if you have a clear vision that pushes you, an ambition that talks to you, you again start a new business, a new goal, spend more money, start a new “ think big” - again rationalizing by thinking “its my ambition- I wont let it go”. If you were to ask the book authors, consultants, blog writers- whats resilience? They will refer to Oxford or Cambridge degree definition and connect it to growth. Whats thinking big? For a labourer doing manual labour on daily wages, thinking of $10 more daily hourly wage-, is a big think. What do you think- is it a big think? If you were this labourer, what will you think- $100 more or $ 200 more per hour? Books will tell you this is think big. I don’t think so. Warren Buffet, the investment trillionaire eats a McDonald’s burger daily for breakfast ever since he was a kid, drinks 5 Cokes a day and eats candy throughout the day- a way of a trillionaire- is that think big? Did it cause trillions? No- what caused trillions is his choice to stick to what he was- a human with idiosyncracies, interest in stocks, and scaling this interest till his old age- straight laser focus on one think till you die. Focused Growth- Only Way to Personal Branding and Career Growth One vision- Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Berkshire Hathaway, Virgin- focused on one vision that scaled itself to grow into trillions, brands to look up to, and individuals to be considered unique- that’s Think Big- focus, persistent movement towards the same vision, being ready for the wave, and going with it when it comes to sweep you to the horizon. Strategies to Become Focused The top strategies that you can adopt to become focused may include improving communication skills like Warren Buffet did, identifying your vision-based identity like Jeff Bezos did, and other such strategies of personal branding that can help you to achieve your vision. By enabling you to define, concretize, and structure your vision, these lead to your growth and transformation. As below are some strategies for becoming a Personal Brand: Recognize Fixed Mindset Traps: Oxford Dictionary is a great tool for writers, literature scholars, and students but a bypass for visionaries. No physicist or religion or dictionary in this world has been able to identify let along define where the vision comes from, and from where the strength to continue with laser focus arrives. Some call it mind, others brain energy, some spirit, soul. Keep searching, understanding, analyzing- Mindtraps that debate with you on your vision and ability to achieve cause philosophical questions, ask for scientific rationales, and tell you that emotions are your biggest enemy- logic must rule the fixed mindset Hitler way. Identify your fixed, rigid beliefs that trap you in logic, rationales, explanations, and cannot tell you about simple difference between a reason and a cause. Reject the Tyranny of “Now”: Now is the best time to start, jump in and learn to swim- will you do that when you don’t know swimming? Then why do you believe in this metaphorical advice. A tyrant mind wants you to take action because a mind cannot know whether you will be a success or a failure- staying busy is its solution. Who cares about wasted time, blown money, sadness, strife? The mind- sorry- it will tell you that its your fault. Reject the tyranny of Now- mind is an awesome servant but a very bad master. Slavery to it gives nothing but failures. Emotional Drive : Emotions are a double edged sword- let them rule, they will side the mind- understand and manage them, your vision is just a vision away. Identify the emotions that have been running you since you can remember- that drive you towards certain things you think are unachievable, that make you wonder, search, make you know of those certain things- leave the why to emotions- all are reasons. Stick and focus on these with You in charge then move forward to create, define, and concretize what you call a “Vision” of becoming a Personal Brand Learning to Recognize Growth: Growth has different dimensions- financial, emotional, rational, - is your idea of starting a business in X rational? Understand the term “rational” – its not analysis, not left brain, not logic- its sanity that factors in reality in the highest imagination of an abstract vision. Note down some rational decisions you have taken that led to better results than your present results- in all dimensions in one go. That’s rational- there is no logic for it, no definition, just getting and moving forward.
